Why do they call him sandman

The sand prevents the eyes from reopening until morning so the children will remain in dreamland. This magical man first appeared in a story by Hans Christian Andersen, where he was kind and told beautiful stories to kids as they slept.

Or, you may jokingly blame him for the goop you find in the corners of your eye every morning. But even without visits from the Sandman, your eyes have quite an interesting nightlife. Discover three facts about your eyes and sleep below. It accumulates as a result of your eyelids and tears combining to become a carwash for your eyes. Your tears wash over your eyes as they move around during different sleep phases.

The tears pick up dust, old eye cells, mucus, bacteria, and any other small foreign substances in your eye. The closed eyelids guide the goop that ends up in the corners of your eye near your nose and along your lash lines. The same cleaning process happens throughout the day when you blink. You can simply remove it with a warm, damp washcloth. But if you notice changes in your rheum, you may have an eye infection such as pink eye.

Pay attention to rheum with an unusual color or consistency, and take note if your eyes produce more rheum than usual. It definitely wasn't written for children. But he does not throw sand into the eyes of children, he squirts milk into them! Apart from that, it is not a story with a regular plot but more of a sequence of dreamlike tableaus.

We adore them and want to tell them gentle, lovely stories, but they drive us crazy at times. We — and especially our ancestors — resorted to cautionary and disciplinary tales like Little Red Riding Hood, in which the wolf will eat you up if you stray from the path.

In the Hoffman story, if you don't go to sleep, the Sandman's going to come and scratch out your eyes. And if strong-arming children into settling down to sleep isn't why the European parents and nurses of old told cautionary bedtime stories, maybe it's because they wanted to prepare their little ones for life's hardships. There's no happily ever after except falling asleep, giving in. He can't be beheaded or trapped or tricked like other villains.

It's hard to distinguish fairy tale, myth, legend and all of that, but in a way he belongs more to the realm of myth than fairy tales. Sign up for our Newsletter! Mobile Newsletter banner close. He is Lord of the Dreaming and it is his job as a member of the Endless to fulfill his job and be scribe behind our dreams.

He is and will always be the Lord Shaper, no matter what incarnation of Dream he is. If you have read The Sandman before, you'll know that Morpheus is the most common name that Dream is called.

This is because Morpheus is the main aspect of Dream that we follow in the story, before Dream is later assumed by Daniel Hal. In many ways, Neil Gaiman used ancient mythology and folklore as a key base to go forth and form the rich Sandman universe, and the name Morpheus is no exception to Gaiman's exquisitely well-thought-out writing.

The name Morpheus comes from the Greek God of dreams and sleep. Morpheus, one of the sons of Somnus, appears in dreams in the form of a human. He is Dream, and he is the Lord of his own kingdom, known as The Dreaming. This is Dream's domain, where dreams are weaved and crafted. Within, he is free to do as he pleases in the infinite lands. Dream is Lord of this domain, which is why he bears the title. The Dreaming is such a popular element of the comics, with a rich supply of characters and literally endless stories to tell, it even inspired its own spinoff comic, simply titled The Dreaming.

You also may have also seen Dream be called Kai-ckul in the books. This is a name that is given to Dream by Nada and her tribe. In the tale, Nada falls in love with Dream and decides to find him, upon which she stumbles into the Dreaming.

When she meets the Lord of the Dreaming, she confesses her love for him. Dream understands her feelings, and he tells her that she can stay with him, but after all she has been through, she refuses. Dream spends enough time trying to convince her to be with him, and when she refuses time and time again, he banishes her to hell. Dream is one of the Endless, a group of anthropomorphic personifications of concepts in relation to life. The Endless are a family that Neil Gaiman thought up, consisting of seven siblings that represent different aspects of life: Dream, Death, Delirium formerly Delight , Despair, Destiny, Desire, and Destruction.
