She graduated at age eleven, a full year early. She might not have been quite as brilliant as Itachi, but she was smart enough to finish school early. Typically Konoha only allowed early graduation during turbulent times, so it's implied that Izumi graduated when things were difficult. Itachi initially showed interest in Izumi because of her Sharingan.
He wanted to unlock it just like Izumi had. Several times she failed to connect with Itachi, then she finally got the chance. She ran into him shortly after he had graduated. They caught up as they spent time by the water. Izumi had some sweets and was surprised when Itachi expressed interest in the sweets.
Izumi had assumed that someone has brilliant as Itachi wouldn't be able to enjoy such things. This simple moment had a lasting impact on how the two saw each other. Though Itachi expressed very little interest in Izumi, Izumi was very much interested in Itachi. The two met at school and she spent a lot of time trying to catch his attention. Their relationship harkens to Sasuke's relationship with Sakura.
Much like Sasuke, Itachi showed little interest in all the women around him. Similarly to how Sasuke eventually returned Sakura's love, Itachi eventually returned Izumi's love. Itachi's father would encourage her to pursue a relationship with his wayward son. Itachi did come to love Izumi. His love for her wouldn't save her when he was ordered to wipe out the entire clan. Despite not officially being an Uchiha, Itachi would be forced to kill her too. In the anime, she was killed by Toby, but it was Itachi that killed her in the official canon.
Izumi, who had already learned of the Uchiha's betrayal to the village, would be extremely accepting of her death. She believed her death was for the greater good, just like her father's had been. Believing that ending her life first would quell his inner doubts, he proceeded to kill her and her mother first. As he lured her mother away, Itachi approached Izumi and placed her in an extremely powerful Tsukuyomi where she lived the entirety of her life in 0. Izumi thanked Itachi for giving her the life she wanted with him, even if it was a dream, and Itachi thanked her for loving him as she passed away peacefully.
So killing her like this proves affection from Itachi's side too. Naruto Manga has ended but there has not been any information about Itachi's lover. Kishimoto Masashi has not disclosed anything about Itachi's lover but some speculation can be made. As we know Itachi, he entered Anbu at 11 and became captain by age 13 1.
And the massacre of Uchiha clan took place while he was in Anbu. So his lover may be from Anbu and the highest possibility that she is an Uchiha otherwise Itachi would have not kill her. Mentioning about Itachi's lover, Kishimoto might be trying to show how much Itachi loves his brother and give strong hold to the plot about Itachi's relationship with his brother Sasuke. Killing whole clan and his own love but not his brother does provide strong proof about how much Itachi loves his brother.

Kekkai Genkai is coveted and Itachi was a powerful shinobi. In order to keep the blood line pure, the clan united, and to ensure the Sharingan is passed on the clan head Fugaku I do believe would have set up an arranged marriage for Itachi, his successor.
