The statistic should tell you that almost all lung cancers are related to smoking and that if you want to have a good chance of avoiding lung cancer, you shouldn't smoke. Scientists must show a statistically valid rate of effectiveness before any drug can be prescribed.

Statistics are behind every medical study you hear about. Many people are afflicted with diseases that come from their genetic make-up and these diseases can potentially be passed on to their children. Statistics are critical in determining the chances of a new baby being affected by the disease. Whenever there's an election, the news organizations consult their models when they try to predict who the winner is. Candidates consult voter polls to determine where and how they campaign.

Statistics play a part in who your elected government officials will be. You know that in order to drive your car you are required by law to have car insurance. If you have a mortgage on your house, you must have it insured as well.

The rate that an insurance company charges you is based upon statistics from all drivers or homeowners in your area. Wal-Mart, a worldwide leading retailer, keeps track of everything they sell and use statistics to calculate what to ship to each store and when. From analyzing their vast store of information, for example, Wal-Mart decided that people buy strawberry Pop Tarts when a hurricane is predicted in Florida!

So they ship this product to Florida stores based upon the weather forecast. Companies make thousands of products every day and each company must make sure that a good quality item is sold. The Purpose of Statistics: Statistics teaches people to use a limited sample to make intelligent and accurate conclusions about a greater population.

The use of tables, graphs, and charts play a vital role in presenting the data being used to draw these conclusions. Statistical knowledge helps you use the proper methods to collect the data, employ the correct analyses, and effectively present the results.

Statistics is a crucial process behind how we make discoveries in science, make decisions based on data, and make predictions. Statistics are important to health care companies in measuring performance success or failure. By establishing benchmarks, or standards of service excellence, quality improvement managers can measure future outcomes. Analysts map the overall growth and viability of a health care company using statistical data.

By identifying statistical trends and trails, health care providers can monitor local conditions and compare them to state, national, and international trends.

Health statistics provide empirical data to assist in the allocation of public and private funds and help to determine how research efforts should be focused. Statistics refers to numerical facts. As a branch of knowledge it refers to collection, presentation analysis and interpretation of data. Statistics is very important in education as it helps in collecting, presenting analysis and interpreting data.

It also helps in drawing general conclusion. Statistics education is the practice of teaching and learning of statistics, along with the associated scholarly research. Statistics is both a formal science and a practical theory of scientific inquiry, and both aspects are considered in statistics education.

Understanding statistics is important for anyone running an organization of any scale. It helps the teacher to predict the future performance of the pupils: Statistics enables the teacher to predict how much of a thing will happen under conditions we know and have measured. For example the teacher can predict the probable score of a student in the final examination from his entrance test score.

A number of sources exist that can potentially be used to generate statistics on the health workforce.

They include national population censuses, labour force and employment surveys, health facility assessments and routine administrative information systems. Progress in technologies and continued research in computational statistics has enabled us to implement sophisticated mathematical models within software that are handled by non-statistician researchers.

Biostatistics has played an integral role in modern medicine. Statisticians help researchers design studies, analyze data from medical experiments, decide what data to collect, help interpret the results of the analyses, and collaborate in writing articles to describe the results of medical research.
